One of the (dis?)advantages of having children is that you are exposed to all sorts of influences and experiences that you otherwise would not have had.
For me, one of these is Hanna Montana. She is the main character (portrayed by Miley Cyrus) in an America TV comedy series. An ordinary teenager by day, and the famous singer by night. A great hit in our house!!
Anyhow, one of Hanna’s songs contains the following lyrics:
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb (yeah yeah ea ea)
These words resonated strongly with me because they accurately described my feelings about what motivates me in the gym.
In my role as a Personal Trainer I spend a lot of time discussing training goals and targets, and while having a well defined goal is crucial to bodybuilding success, it seems to me that we focus too much on the result, we think only of the outcome of our training endeavours and ignore what Miley describes as “the climb”.
The actual training is our reward, the hours that we sweat and strain and suffer, that is what we enjoy! It is the doing of it, the discipline and sacrifice, THAT is our ultimate goal!!
A lifetime spent dedicated to physical excellence.
So, enjoy the climb!
